Kid Rock (Robert James Ritchie) was born on January 17, 1971 in Romeo, Michigan where he grew up on a six acre orchard with three siblings. Growing up with an interest in rap music and hip hop culture young kid rock got into break dancing going on to participate in competitions. In his tween years he joined up with a break dance crew called the Furious Funkers and began experimenting with turntables. During his high school days he would DJ at parties for beer, but eventually put his skills to proper work when he got involved with Bo Wisdom of Groove Time Productions performing basement parties for $30 a night where he earned his stage name.
Around age 15 after running away from home and being forced to sell drugs he managed to meet Chris “Doc Roun-Cee” Pouncy and Bob, known as The Beast Crew, through Pouncy Rock met producer D-Nice of Boogie Down Productions and was eventually able to open for BDP one night with a Jive Records A&R in the crowd leading to a demo deal that ended up becoming a full record contract and against the wishes of his parents rock signed the deal at only 17 years old
Kid Rock’s debut album “Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast” came out on December 30, 1990 through Jive Records selling over one hundred thousand copies upon release making him one of the biggest names in Detroit, though his career sort of fell off after being released from his contract with Jive in 1991 and not managing to put out a follow up album for three years.
Later in 1991 Kid Rock managed to get picked up by a Indie label called Continuum Records and was also paid to make an appearance on the Insane Clown Posse album Carnival of Carnage.
In March of 1993 Kid Rock released his second album The Polyfuze Method through Continuum Records and was the start of his rock rap sound but only managing to sell around 15,000 copies after disagreements over singles selection.
In the same year he released the Fire It Up EP in December 1993 featuring the slow burning hit “I Am The Bullgod”. The album failed to get much attention outside of the Detroit music scene and after lack luster sales multiple times Continuum saw little future for Kid Rock and dropped him in 1994, immersing himself in the local music scene afterwards.
A long running relationship with Kelly South brought a son putting Rock in a place where he had to produce for his family he began releasing monthly demos later dubbed “The Bootleg Series” featuring many collaborations with local up and comers, also during this time he formed the band Twisted Mother Trucker.
In 1995 in order to cover studio fees Rock took on a job as a janitor at Whiterooms Studios and when he wasn’t working he managed to put together his fourth album “Early Mornin’ Stoned Pimp”, which came out on January 9, 1996 through his own label Top Dog Records and managed to sell 6,000 copies from the trunk of his car. Around this time Lava/Atlantic Records A&R man Andy Karp took notice of Kid Rock’s career after meeting him in Cleveland in 1996, and was later signed with a $100,000 bonus which he took out on the town to celebrate leading to an arrest for a bar fight. Atlantic pushed Rock for more of a rock sound not initially liking the country feel to a few tracks on the album, and also remove the line about going platinum from “Only God Knows Why”.
The album “Devil Without a Cause” came out on August 18, 1998 released through Lava/Atlantic and produced by Kid Rock with John Travis. The third single “Bawitdaba” was a hit in the US reaching the number four spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and led to Rid Rock playing tours with bands like Metallica,Creed,Ted Nugent and Sevendust. The album went on to go platinum 11 times over selling over nine million copies in the US alone.
Kid Rock backed the success of his first album with “The History of Rock” on May 30, 2000 which is a compilation album featuring his indie recordings and previously unreleased studio cuts along with a few new songs. The album managed to debut at number two in the US selling just under half a million copies.
On November 20, 2001 Kid Rock released “Cocky” marketing it as the official follow up album to his previous hit album “Devil Without a Cause” debuting at the number seven spot selling over 200,000 to date selling just over 5.3 million copies. The album was dedicated to Joe C who died a year previous to the release of the album.
More recently Kid Rock put out the album “First Kiss”, released on February 24, 2015 and marks his tenth studio release, and his first with Warner Bros. The album managed to reach the number two spot on both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian albums chart.
